If you enjoy history on the Chicago worlds fair, you might find the book "Devil in the White City" of interest. It's a fictional novel, but extremely period and data correct. It's amazing just how many items took flight from that event. A good read.

And that 1893 half you speak of was my first collectable coin. My great grandmother gave one to me. It could be said, it was her fault for my obsession of hunting and collecting.

As always, a pleasure reading your posts.

It is a good book but it is not fictional. The author intertwines historical information about the Chicago World's Fair with the crimes commited by a contemporary Chicago serial killer in Chicago. The author (Erik Larson)has a few of books in that particular vein. Read his book concerning trans-Atlantic radio and a murder in England. It's tough to put down.

Bavaria Mike: Now that the coin is straightened it looks even more stellar. Nice find!

Re: Gold coin and Christopher Columbus...UPDATE...

Thanks all for the great comments! I did not go to the palace site this weekend, too many fields open right now. I do need to get to the palace site as they do not mow their grass, a few times a year they go out there and cut it down with a sickle when it gets wild, a little strange with the gardening technique. Also finished the gold coin field, just some average finds and 3 nice glass beads, one is a double bead and I estimate 700 years old as these were the types found in graves excavated by the Archies in a nearby town a few years ago. Did about 2.5 hours at the castle today, only dug a handfull of square nails. HH, Mike
