Hi everyone.
I went back to the old RR depot site the other day. Managed to find a bunch more of the square nails, some of them in much better shape. I was searching along the base of an old plum tree gone wild when I got a great double tone reading at an indicated 6". It was there no matter which direction I swung the coil, so I dug and almost passed out when I was the edge of the button. At first I thought it was some type of fat coin. Back side says "Horstmann Philadelphia". The only thing I can come up with is that it's probably WWII era. Maybe PBK will visit this post and pinpoint the date for me.
Next good outing was to some land we own near the Oregon border. We were told by a neighbor who's a history enthusiast that the Immigrant Trial runs through it. Went Sunday and checked it out for a couple of hours with my daughter. The very first signal, again under an old tree, was the .40-82 cartridge. I've found several references that place this cartridge popular in the 186-90's, but havent found anything specific. At this point, its enough evidence that the trail might really have come through here for me to take another look.
The clad is from a couple of parks I just had to hit in between. Good practice at least. Sorry for having to post the pics in separately.
