COLONIAL GOLD COIN...
Only joking, it's US Colonial period. (April fools) Today I have some buttons
Sometimes, your best judgement is spot on....I had decided that before we started a new ploughed field we should give the nearby park a quick hour or so explore. Its a larged grassed area that is mostly medieval ridge & furrow but has never been ploughed since so we generally don't bother with it. However, because it was close to a large late 18th C 'manor type' house, I wanted to see if we could get some nice Georgian Buckles or the odd coin, hoping they would be in nicer condition than their ploughed cousins.
We headed over to the back of the house, where I wanted to start the hunt & we had a few modern coins along the way. I then got a 1921 Sixpence, & shouted to Dad to start gridding, but he was busy digging a lovely complete Georgian Buckle, so we knew we were in the right spot. Just before the 1 hour point, up popped the surprise 1787 Gold Half Guinea. (sorry my in-situ photos didn't come out well, must have slipped it on the wrong settings) It was about 7 inches deep in nice sandy soil, not far from a 1694 Farthing under a tree root.
After 2 hours on the grass & satisfied that we can return another day, we went next door to finish a field we had 90% completed. Therefore, leaving the new ploughed field for another day.
I ended up with a Rare Mary 1553-4 Groat
1739 portobello medal
Livery Button
Tudor Button
17th C Token
Strange hand thingy
Medieval Lead bird Feeder
& bits...
2 Years without the 2 of us getting any Gold Coins, now I'm on 3 this year - 'yes' I am happy

Beatuful finds! Cheers to you on your gold coin! The Georgian buckle is beautiful, and the green patina is lovely. Do you think the hand thing might be part of a pipe tamper?

Best Wishes,

Not really, its not clear in the photo but it has a 'caterpillar' bump in the middle, I've never seen anything like it but the tooling looks circa 17th-18th C.
