Visited the new site over this weekend and had a few decent items, no silver but a very nice early Iron Age Brooch. A two piece Colchester brooch, these seem to have developed along different lines to that of the fibulae.
The two piece brooch has a separate spring and pin and has a date range of between 50and 80 AD. Many derivatives from this form exist including dolphin, headstud and T-shaped brooches. Not perticually a rare brooch.. what really intregues me is that the coils on the integral bilateral spring and hook issuing from the back of the bow are still fully functional, and apart from the missing pin (proberbly why it was lost) the brooch is almost complete. There could be a good chance of a ealy coin from this site, time will tell.

UPDATE ON THE STRAP ENDS..BELOW..

Don't know about the strap ends, but the Fibula/Brooch is a keeper for sure! Too bad the pin is broken off...

Thanks..the strap ends are later, 13th-15thcentury, but I like the fact that the site dates early.

I also noticed Hispan has not posted in a while, a lot of the regulars seem to be missing also. The new change over for me was nearly the last straw, but with time it can be excepted.

Don't think there will be many more outings, but I'm hoping for a few more finds.

Hispan has his reasons, prior to this new format.
Good luck with the end of season run.

Thanks. Yes same princible only the Roman Brooches like these were used to fasten clothing, so like a large decorative pin.

Fibulae were originally used to fasten clothing. They represent an improvement on the earlier straight pin which was less secure and could fall out. While the head of the earlier straight pin was often decorated, the bow or plate of the fibula provided a much increased scope for decoration. Among some cultures, different fibula designs had specific symbolic meanings. They could refer to a status or profession such as single woman, married woman, man, warrior, or chief. Some Roman-era fibulae may symbolize specific ranks or positions in the Roman legions or auxiliary. In some cultures, fibulae were worn in pairs and could be linked by a length of chain.
