i couldnt believe it when i pulled this bad boy out of the dirt. the only problem is the only part worn off us the dang date..but based on pictures, i have the matrohn head coronet large cent struck in 1816-1839. it has a line under the "cent" in the back, and the curl of her hair under the neck identifies it as well...now its been a month since i started metal detecting, and stuff keeps getting older and better. i feel i cannot stop now... ever.. this hobby is worse than crack!

Great day for you! :) I just back myself, and all I found today was some clad. Still love the hunt though!
(Not to mention trash, and oh pop cans. Why must you torment me pop cans.)

Nice find! Very nice detail on that LC.

It is odd to me that there is that much detail on the coin but the date is gone. Possibly a counterfeit?

nice LC.
you can narrow your search down to 1836-1839,
and if you post a pick of the back, the date could be narrowed down even more.

I was thinking the same thing, is the spelling of the word "Cent" on the back altered in any way?

as for a counterfeit?... i doubt there was a counterfeit 8 inches down in the ground by a tree high in a mountain. as for a pattern strike, i dont really know what that is....it looks worse in person than it is, i rubbed my finger over the high spots to highlight it for the picture... i just think its bad luck, ill posg a pic of the back when i get home

I'm sure it's not a counterfeit.
Sometimes people would convert the letter "e" into a letter "u", in the word "cent"
Getting the gist?
(One of my rare attempts at being discreet)
I've seen those posted here and elsewhere, and sometimes they would remove the date as well,
why, I don't know. In the 1880-1930's and even later, people loved to play with coins.
Hobo nickels, The seated lady sitting on a toilet, lots of interesting things.
