1896-S Barber Half - It was meant to happen
Hi All,
Been a long time since I posted. I've only hunted a few times in the past month because I'm fresh out of new sites. Yesterday the weather was so nice, I decided to grab the detector, get in the car and see where it decided to take me. I ended up at an old school that I've hunted many, many times in the past. I've had some luck there, with lots of early wheat's, a 1911 Canada cent, and a 1914 Barber dime. I'm not sure of the date of the original school, but my grandmother attended it in the 20's.
There is a small area near the main building that I mostly avoided, because its in a built-up area where fill was brought in when the old schoolhouse was torn down to make room for the new building (1950's).
I was going to grid the area, so I lined myself up with a drain pipe to my back and turned on the machine. Swept the coil TWICE and got the signal. The ground is bad here, and anything over 6" deep sounds like crap, but this signal actually sounded really good. Cursor bounced all over the place, and never did get into the top right corner, so I was stunned when I pulled a Barber half out of the hole.

I forgot to tell you this. After I dug the coin, I was worried that the dirt stuck to the coin would cause scratches if I put it in my pocket, so I walked back and locked it up in my car. I spent the rest of the hunt looking at my car every couple of minutes to make sure no one was trying to break in! I wouldn't have minded so much if they stole the car, but my new coin....hands off!
Want to trade for your SEATED half?

Nice halve! Congrats to you!
Funny how old haunts still pop out a coin here and there.
There are a lot of square feet missed over the years...almost impossible to detect the "whole" of anything anywhere with 100% accuracy.

Thanks for the comments, everybody. Jewelerguy: I'm not much when it comes to values, but I did find something on PCGS that said that the S series is fairly rare. It listed grade 4 (whatever that means) at $115.00.
My daughter wants to know if I can sell this coin and buyer her a car. I told her possibly something better than a matchbox car, but not as nice as the Barbie dream Corvette. Any thoughts?
