I know what pack rats eat - now I know what they drink!
I was cleaning out the work shop at my old house & there was carpeting nailed to the wall in one corner. It covered a length of about 16' & was about 4' high. It was bulging out at the bottom so I ripped off the carpet. The rats nest was in between the studs (about 12 sections total) and the nest was about 3' deep. The rat was sitting in one section, he had food stashed in several other sections, & the last section had 8 vintage mini booze bottles stashed in the bottom. They had to be in there over 20 years! That's when the last people lived there. The house is 43 years old so the bottles could be even older. In addition to his "stash" he also had 2 pairs of my work gloves, a toothbrush, chicken feed, cat food, chicken feathers, & misc hardware pieces.
I've read about pack rat nests being used by generations of rats for as long as 100 years !!!!! Maybe this rats' g-granddaddy hid the bottles there..... This is by far the coolest thing I've found in a rat nest.
