DON'T LIKE SPIDERS?

.......Real nice day here in my part of Illinois. Got overcast
as the day went on.

Went to a small town and hit a church picnic grove.

Good folks are in church,; I'm out digging in the dirt ;)

Not much on the finds, bit of clad, but had some
good time out.
Not even sure what some of it is ??? :P

Think this could be part of a ring, plated.

No idea, very thin, bent, don't even know what
the shape should be. Could be something written,
will clean it more.

Find of the day. I call them Osage Oranges.
Don't know if other folks use them for anything, but..........

Pick them up off the ground and take home a bunch.
Place one or two in an old coffee can and place
around basement, also in crawl spaces. They will rot
away and dry up, no smell that I can tell, no bugs
as they dry.
Spiders, for some reason, do not like them. Will
leave the area.

Nice being out today.

all have a good un.....

Re: DON'T LIKE SPIDERS?

Found one of those Osage Oranges today, Sherm. At our campsite on Jekkyl Island GA. Don't remember ever seeing any in Iowa, but guess I was never looking for them. Sounds like you enjoyed a nice fall day.

Good to be able to get out while we can, before the freeze is on. Glad you were able to get out and have a fun day. That's pretty cool info on the Spiders.

Down in Arkansas, folks call 'em bodark (from the French bois d'arc - "arch of wood") apples.

Not good for much except flinging. Squirrels like to cut on 'em, though.

They call them "hedgeballs" in Minnesota. They sell them in the grocery store for like 50 cents a piece. They are suppose to repell and or kill bugs.

That looks like a really nice site. I'll bet there were some good finds made there.

Re: DON'T LIKE SPIDERS?

Bodark, hedgeballs, whatever different folks
call them they do seem to bother bugs.

B,
they sell them for 50 cent each :o Think I
will fill up the van and head north.

AP & NS,
the Good Lord stops by every few weeks,
(usually around sunrise or sunset), and we
sit around with a coffee or a tea. We sit
and pass the time. He has a lot on His mind and
appreciates the fact that I don't bother him often;
think that is why He comes by and visits. You should
hear some of the #@!$%#@!, (with a capital S), He
comes up with, man that is one tough name to live with

Lord knows me, I know the Lord. HALLELUJAH

BK,
perhaps, but alas, not by me :P

all have a good un...........

Re: DON'T LIKE SPIDERS?

We put those along the inside of our garage and up in the attic. The spiders don't like them at all. We tried freezing one so that we would have them anytime of the year but they turn to mush.

Re: DON'T LIKE SPIDERS?

On the way to J. D.'s hunt in Missouri, I passed through and gassed up at a town named Bois d' Arc, Missouri! Here in Oklahoma they grow wild and the wood of the bois d' arc was used almost exclusively by the early Indians to make hunting bows. Some of the present day folk of Indian ancestory still practice the art of bow making and they will spend weeks in the woods looking for just the right limb of the bois 'd arc tree to make a bow. By the way it is pronounced "bodark" with a long o. It is rumored that the apples from the tree will repel snakes, but I don't know that for a fact. Some refer to the fruit as hedge apples but many call them Osage oranges, named after Osage county, Oklahoma that was once the Osage Indian reservation. Pawhuska, Oklahoma is still the seat of the Osage Indian Nation, Pawhuska being translated as gray hair in the native tongue. All the mineral rights in Osage County still belongs to the Osage tribe and they get a cut of all the oil production and mining. They also are vested in gaming casinos and smoke shops. When the Cherokee tribe was moved to Oklahoma they put their reservation abuting the Osage reseration and our dumb government didn't know they were bitter enemies. A lot of border fueding went on in early Indian Territory history as a result. Once the Osage tribe was kind of looked down on by the Cherokee who were after all, "civilized", but now the Osage is looked on as the rich tribe, each tribal member receiving head right stipends every year. Just a bit of history I thought you might find interesting. Monty

Re: DON'T LIKE SPIDERS?

Here in my part of Texas we call that tree a Bois d' arc (pronounced: Board Ark.) And we call the round balls, horse apples. That's the first I've heard of the apples repelling spiders. The tree is pretty much a nuisance to us because it has large thorns that are very painful if encountered. The only thing that it has been used for is fence posts. The farmers and cattle ranchers cut them into fence posts because the wood is so hard that it will last for many years in the ground.

I know them as hedge apples, but I didn't know they repelled spiders.
Thanks for that info, 'cause nothing freaks me out like a big hairy
spider (SHIVER!).

Sherm,
Near Pittsburgh Pa where I grew up they were known as " Monkey Balls" :o for some reason. We used to throw them at each other as kids. Thanks for the tip on the spiders. They ( the spiders) are working their way in since its getting cold outside.

Re: DON'T LIKE SPIDERS?

Great thread Sherm, I enjoyed learning about the osage or hedge apple or all it's other names. I have never encountered them in Vermont so they must not like our climate. Monty thanks for the native end of it, I have a friend that is osage and I learned a little about her heritage.
Happy Hunting Sherm
