It looks like a tack buckle to me, as for cleaning it won't it looks kinda frail, it's fine like it is. Congrats on digging some history! HH acman

Great, thanks! It was my first time ever metal detecting and I got some other hits but didn't have time to search. I will deffinately be going out tomorrow and continue searching the area. I have to admit that it was intact but I was a little over aggressive during the excavating, noob lesson learned.
