Its got to be the NJ soil/ salt. I have found quite a few like that in the bay where the salt has ate away at the copper core

I get them like that from saltwater, galvanics

did you find it in a sand trap at the golf course 
that clad coin is junk , like all the rest of them .. stick to metal detecting, because the word out in the street is , you suck at golf
