Thanks I'm writing my blog now to tell the full story. When I unearthed it I thought, "Ug, another penny," assuming it was a Lincoln. But closer inspection proved otherwise. And when I saw the "185?" I raised both arms in celebration. NJLargeCent unearthed a few Indians and Buffalos, in a spot I abandoned for being too junky. Lesson learned. He also got a merc.

Hey all... here's a link to the story I wrote about our long and dig-filled day:
Identified Flying Object | Treasure Detectors
My daughter had an especially fussy day yesterday, so this was wrote it during scarce quiet times... it may not be my most elegant prose.

Was great to be there to witness it. If I had just gridded 1 row to the right, that would be in my "hall of finds." Glad it's in yours. Let's get back to that site soon!

Yeah, I tend to agree... terrified to wear any more off, but would love to see if I could reveal something on the reverse.

hot hydrogen peroxide... might make it darker but should help break up the crud on the back. It's probably not worth anything in that condition anyways... Really nice find though! Hope I get one someday.

Gimmie, yeah... I think I'm going to try H202 with a q-tip and just focus on the reverse. This way I'm sure to preserve the front side. NJLargeCent once went a little too far with his H202 bath and I'm being cautious thanks to his blunder!

Yeah your cleaning is done. Peroxide is bad for flying eagles and fat indians. He will never look any better I would say it is just right. If it was mine I would put a little bit of olive oil on it. Nice save by the way.

 Detecting Don
Great Find, I have never found a Flying Eagle. I like this coin so much it is the only coin in my collection that I have bought and I have one of each of the 3 variations (no I don't have an 1856).
Congratulations!
