I got back out to the site I've been hunting this past few weeks to hit another area. Still haven't found the "site" but did find a little pocket of musket balls and a very nice French shoe (breech) buckle! This is the first French buckle of this type that I've found in this condition. This is as it is out of the dirt. I'll do a little cleaning before it gets into the display case.

Has to be even better, close!

I'm reasonably sure that the site is gone...destroyed when the brick works was built and subsequently destroyed. I think I'll have to content myself with scraps...

Nice! I'm surprised that the iron attachment didn't rust away. What kind of site are you at?

Great condition, but why do you say French? Seen them over here as well.

I've only ever found this style of chape at French sites and have just associated it with French...could be completely wrong though...

How can you tell if it's from France?
Does it have a little white surrender flag affixed to it somewhere?
I kid, I kid.

most all knee buckles i have found have the anchor shaped chape and unless theres a hallmark on it somewhere its next to impossible to tell where its from or what nationality it is . lol lol

I'd be hoping for non French, much better chance of something killer. French sites almost seem to have a cap, not that the finds can't be great, but they just seem to top out at a French silver or Spanish cob. Maybe one day you'll take it to the next level.
