    After the fair..

I got to the Nevada County Fairgrounds at first light Monday morning after the fair ended, and picked up enought change to buy breakfast without having to dig. Well, almost. My first ever ring was down about an inch. My second ring lay right in the grass. Neither rings were great finds, a kids ring, and a larger mens ring, maybe silver plated, but unmarked.
I got a good tip from another detectorist there last year. He told me to hunt in zero discrimination mode, and produced a small gold nugget and diamond ring to make his point. He said that way, you get to decide what to dig. It was good advice.

Yes, my wife and I often do parking lot scans when start a new area. I can dig more targets at 3 inches and less and my find ratio increased several fold, but who's counting.

I'm likin' this Garrett AT Pro. I got it when they first came out last Sept. At first, I thought it might not be working right; some of the early coils got a lot of complaints. But the more I use it, the more I think there was just a learning curve. I went back to the fairgrounds this morning for a couple hours. First thing I dug was a small sterling silver ring with turquoise inserts, about four inches down, and with some other trash. I could hear both signals clearly, not quite blended together. Started my day off right for sure. Would have been easy to pass up. Zero discrim mode makes for a noisy hunt, but is a good teacher. I had to work for my $1.97, but at least I could tell where to dig.
Well, at least I'm getting some exercise...
