...A cannonball that is. I've been out of commission for over a week with back problems. I just got around to cracking the cocoon off of one of the last cannonballs I found. I thought you all might get a kick out of it. Here's some pictures and a video of the event.

Picture from last post showing the eight balls I found in one day...

Here is a close-up of the ball with the thick cocoon before the the cracking...

And here it is Humpty Dumptyed...

Plus a quick video of me whacking away on the cannonball with a hammer...

I hope to be back digging by next week. Thanks for checking out my post.

Man I love seeing your post, I've only dug three cannonballs myself, they were all on land, two twelve pound boreman case shot and a six pound solid shot! I'm proud to own them, keep the post coming!

I didn't know you had to break those things out of a shell. Looks almost brand new now that it's out of it's shell. Hope the back problems stay away.

Yeah, you're right. I prolly won't run it through. You have to with salt water shells, and I've done my share of them. They look smooth and shiny like this one, but this is a fresh water one. I'll just go ahead and cook it raw and see what happens.

If that thing had a fuse on it like the other one-in water or out for 150 years-bangin on it just wouldn't feel right to me.
Nice finds as usual.
If i were a farmer workin the plow, I would be more scared throwing em down the side of the bank and into the stream. The smart ones stood behind the oak trees.

I always wondered, how do you use electrolysis for mineralized pieces?

Lucky you didn't get killed. The powder can get wet and dry over years and still be active. Been several deaths from war items found. Great finds. Be safe.

What kind of tree's do these fall from?

Seriously that's a very cool find. I liked the video as well.
