Wow what a awesome day it turned out to be even though I got rained out after a 4 hour hunt .. I had good luck at a old site I have hit a few times inwhich previously I scored some artillery frags at. I had a late start today but within 30 minutes of swinging I hit a large iron target my first thought was horse shoe , so I dug down about 5 inches ,nothing but still a very strong signal on the xlt . Pulled out a little more dirt and saw a large peice of steel as I dug around it I realized I just scored my first complete artillery shell .... so I had to stop to give thanks for such a awesome find !

So I continued on and then scored about 40 % of another artillery shell ... peice by peice ,, so I started heading out to the far part of the field and I made about half way there and it started raining lightly, so I thought I would take shelter underneath some tree's and hopefully it would pass about that time I look up and see this huge greenish cloud with dirt in it above me as a large gust of wind came through bending over the big tree's as I looked up and heard a big "crack" then it was knee's and elbows across the field as the tree I was just under came crashing down ....as I made a record sprint back to the truck ...

So when I got home did some quick searching online and discovered my shell is a Mullane shell ... still have to research the frags to ID .... But wow what a awesome day !! Thanks for looking ...

I think the bad storm was a omen telling ive found my fill for the day and to go on home ! Now i just have to figure the best way to clean it .... A Tennessee Mulane is a hard shell to dig Bud. Cannonball Guy can tell you how to safely clean the shell. HH, Quindy.

That probably would have been funny to watch you running across the field with a cannon ball and your detector from a falling tree in the pouring rain. Sounds like some ghosts didnt want you there either. lol great finds though

Quindy, I've now sent Ifoundit69 a link to a good article giving instructions for doing Electrolysis cleaning of iron relics. (It is at www.bulletandshell.com.)

Ifoundit69, I know from personal relic-digging experience that sometimes when a fired Mullane/Tennessee-sabot shell smashed into the ground, the wide copper disc sabot and iron attachment-bolt on its base would break off as the shell tunneled into the ground. Knowing about that, when I dug my M/T-S shell (missing its sabot and base-bolt) at the Chancellorsville VA battlefield, I dug the hole out to about 3 feet back in the direction the shell was fired from. I was rewarded for that extra effort, by finding its missing copper disc sabot and base bolt, which were about 18 inches away from the shell in the hole. So, if you can re-find the hole your shell was in, I suggest you expand it outward to see if your shell's sabot and (iron) base-bolt are anywhere nearby.
