1855 Brass Springfield Rifle Band, 1934 Belgian Franc & Other Finds from Yesterday

Had a four day weekend, hunted every day. Days 1-3 found basically nothing. I found all of this yesterday. (isn't that crazy how hunting goes) Did some research on the brass band & almost positive it's from an 1855 Springfield (any more insight would be appreciated) The Franc was a neat & unusual find as well. Lots of other finds as well. Many hours put in this weekend! Can't wait to hit this spot again! HH! :skullflag:

Found a reproduction online of the brass band, how I ID'd it (guess this is what she looked like new)

Your "franc" says Good For 1 F...it's Belgian, but are you sure it's not some sort of token? It doesn't really strike me as a coin, but I could be wrong. Last item looks like a tape dispenser.

The same thought crossed my mind but there are two pieces broken off (looks like the one piece would get in the way if it was a tape dispenser) can't find anything like it online although I agree it's some sort of dispenser

Erik is correct - the Belgian piece is a token. The phrase, "Bon Pour" is the key - it means "Good For". Can't tell you any more about it, tho.

Oops! I was wrong. The Belgian piece is not a token (regardless of the "good for" wording) - it is a coin issued by the government. It is listed as Yeoman #28 in quantity of 10 million +. That particular variety was made 1922-34, and a very similar variety, Yeoman #28.1 was made 1922-35. The difference in the two varieties is that the former carries the French word, "Belgique" whereas the latter carries the Flemish word, "Belgie". Sorry about that! I learn something every day...

Great finds Josh! I am glad you are getting the hang of the MXT. Had fun hunting with you Sunday (boy that is a long drive though!).

Josh,
You definitely nailed it with the Springfield band. That is a really cool find and definitely should get you points on the board. Interesting Belgium coin. MD'n is feast or famine. Get used to it especially when you relic hunt.

Thanks Hardy, glad you & John were able to come up. We'll have to plan another hunt for the fall or winter

I checked the 1892 - 1901 Springfield parts and those bands don't match the band I found (don't think they were brass but I could be wrong). Those bands are also thinner than this one. The 1855 reproduction I found (is in this thread) seems to be a dead match. I've also seen similar images of these bands that were dug at Civil War camps.

Nice work and sorry that I didn't see this before now.

If you still have the 1855 band, would you be willing to part with it?

This is a relic collecting interest area of mine.

Thanks and best regards,

Max
