Dug a pretty neat little cuff button this evening. I think it is a New York State seal but would sure like some input. Have dug a 3 ringer, pocket watch, and several penny buttons in the same little field. I also got a fired round ball and a tack buckle this evening but nothing worth posting. Kinda proud of my little button.

Says " EXTRA QUALITY" on back

Is it CW era.....:icon_scratch:

That does look like an "extra quality" button. Very nice find. Way to go.

TNGUNS sent me a PM, asking me to review his find for confirmation that it is a civil war era New York troops button. So, by his request, here is my report.

It is a New York State Militia button, but this kind doesn't actually show the New York state seal ...which has two women standing at each side of a shield. However, it does show some elements of the state seal. Your button is shown as button NY-30 in the buttonbook by Alphaeus H. Albert.

I'm reasonably sure your find is a civil war era one, even though it has a non-dateable "Extra Quality" backmark, because it has what we button-collectors call the "narrow rim." Shortly after the civil war era. the rim on NY "staff" (3-piece) buttons became noticeably wider. If you've got an Albert book, compare the width of the rim on your civil war version of NY-30 and NY-28-B (a postwar button).

But because a narrow rim on a 3-piece button isn't always a 100%-certain indicator of pre-1866 manufacture:
Combining the narrow rim with finding several no-doubt-about-it civil war military relics in the same field, I think we can be at least 99%-certain that your button was lost in the same time-period as those other ACW relics.

About every time I get ready to call "Uncle" on little field I get something else worth another hunt or two. Have really hunted it tight and used tire tracks from previous mowing to grid. Then go back and find something else.....good lesson. Owner just mowed it really close today. Saw it driving by and hit her again. Never get it all. :dontknow:

Thanks again CannonBallGuy
