1785 CONNECTICUT COPPER & A RARE ONE PIECE EAGLE BUTTON * RV-35
sittin home looked at the clock..11 am.what to do? a little voice said go up to the very 1st cellar hole that ya took Dan on your very 1st cellar hole hunt!
so off I went..slow going at first. diggin everything. a lot of iron,a horsehoe, square nails, then a colonial barbecue fork! i mean i've dug colonial meat forks before and they were small but, this one takes the prize! then a tombac button, then kicked and rolled some rotted trees and got a bigger flat button(so I thought) a shoe buckle frame at 10 inches.a butter knife blade with "best steel" stamped into it.last target was 8 inches deep and sounding real nice.dug down and much to my suprise a pretty nice 1785 Connecticut copper.conditions were just perfect, ground was nice & damp. alot of machines including mine have attacked this site and it just goes to show ya that even if ya think a site has been pounded, there's always a keeper or 2 left somewhere.
hoping someone can ID this button.it looks like a rock scraped the eagles head.not sure if this happened while digging it? no back mark. it's a RV-35 very rare Diplomatic button..I wrote to William Leigh to confirm this
72 coppers on the year

HMN, sweet finds! I am looking at the button and trying to find the head(prob right there). I see the olive branch in the tallons and the lightning bolts. Great button!!!

Always love the amount of photo's in your posts Dave, makes me feel like I'm right there with you!
The 1785 Connecticut copper still has a lot of detail on it, not much corrosion either. The shoe buckle frame
is a beauty, but what I really like is the old butter knife . . . it really was made with the "best steel"!
Dave
My passion is hunting relic sites, as I feel the imprint of past lives often lingers there!
Metal Detectorists finds, are the background noise of antiquity! (Time Team)
Don't question it . . . just dig it!

Hey Dave . The Conn. copper is in great shape but the find of the day is that early diplomat button . I find it Referenced as : Albert O11A. Described as " eagle in flight facing right to olive branch , bolts of lightning in left talon, 24 mm one piece flat button no backmark manufactured before 1820 . Also listed as very rare ! Another super button for your collection congrats ! MaineRelic
