Super Rare 1803 Cent?

Okay... I'm trying to stay calm here. But I think I found a SUUUUUPER rare 1803 large cent. Now, there were over 3M of these made, but the super rare part is if the 1803 on the front is LARGE and the 1/100 on the back is small.

I think that's what I found.

If you look at pix, the 1 and 3 almost touch the bottom of the bust figure on front and the line that divides the 1 over the 100 appears to be lower & sorta in the "crook" of the ribbon's elbow like in the "small" pic.

Anyone?

I'm so excited! It's my first non-clad coin!

Here are some better shots after it sat in plain water in my ultrasonic jewelry cleaner for an hour.

Have to agree that it is not the Sheldon 264 variety of the 1803. There are about 24 known varieties, not just what Red Book shows and it is hard to distinguish many of them without good photos. Here is a nice website to look at when trying to ID Large Cents if you do not have one of the books that describes the different varieties for each year. This site does not have all of the earlier year Large Cent varieties pictured but does have quite a few.

Great find for it being your first non-clad coin. Personally I couldn't say if its a large or small date variety without a better close up picture. I'm not sure how the other posters can say that it's not with such confidence either based on the picture. Then again I make no claims of being a coin guru.

From what I can tell from your photos, it looks like a small date large fraction to me.

Anne, that coin is awesome ! The only problem I see with it is, now you have quite a uphill challenge in trying to top it : ) You know the old saying , one in the hand is worth two in the bush ! Congrats its a great find.

Annie, you made a HUGE jump back in time from the "clad era" and you should be proud! Living in Massachussetts you will have plenty of opprotunity to make even older finds.

I cant think of a better "non-clad" coin to find than that one!! I would keep on hitting the area where you found it. There is probably more items in the dirt that date from the same time frame.
