Cache!
Okay, so I decided to hit a dump site I had worked last year (big one, lot of ash). Few hours digging, not much to show. I'm widening the pit and hit this plastic oil container about 6 inches from the surface in with some larger stones. I pick it up thinking it's recent trash, but the weight is off... it's not empty. So, I give it a shake; no liquid. I think to myself, "Maybe it just packed with earth or something congealed inside. I take the cap off and peer in - Duct tape. Okay, now I know there's something in there; I toss it in my back and try and continue digging...I can't.
I head back home; I gotta see.
I cut the first one away; I have to work my way through two more...done. Plastic bag...good sign; another, and finally a bundle.
What is it? I peel the first one away (as hard as he/she tried there was still humidity)..
Microfilm!?
Yup. It appears to be various legal transcripts and documents from about thirty years ago from, California What's up with that?
Anyway thanks for looking, and I'd actually like your opinions as to what I should do with them...
(I really only want to turn them in to the police station as a last resort. Once I do that I lose track of them and the story - something I'd like to follow)

Wow, what a find.
Can you read some of what's on the film?
Personally I would copy the information and then figure out who to turn it over to.
Depending on what is on the film, a county prosecutor might be who to turn it over to.
I'd investigate what's on the film first, it could imply police or politicians, prosecutors or even the mob.
I wouldn't just randomly turn it over to the police, without knowing who & what it seems to be about.
For someone to go to all that trouble to carefully hide that film, keeping it protected, tells me it's
special information. Unlikely it's just someones records, or something mundane.
Probably about money/embezzling, hopefully it's nothing too horrible.
Post any updates, I already dying of curiosity...

Go to your local library. It's likely they have the equipment to read it.

Was there a reporters body with the container...may have been onto something he or she should have left alone...

Let us know what it turns out to be.

I agree with DownEast, take it to the library and see if they have the equipment to read it/ convert it to larger print. You may have a big story on your hands. Don't inform the cops, inform the media if anyone, after you do a little digging that is. Very cool find!

Man that is one crazy find. There is definitely a story there but it will take some doing to find out what it is, you dug it now it's up to you to find out what the story is. If you can't figure it out then perhaps like diggummup said, give it to the media and I am sure they will find out what the reason it was hidden in the oil container and tossed into a dump site. If it turns out to be a huge scandal or crime evidence than I would be voting banner on this wild find just on the basis of being so unusual.
Now if I were you I wouldn't be getting my finger prints all over it either. One more thing, there may also be a reward involved here as well.
Please, please keep us posted on what you find out.

Male sure and keep the oil container too. You could scan the barcode on the can...might be able to gain information from it, like where and when it was purchased. I think there is a phone app that can do it. Just a thought...

It may show who actually killed JFK and where Jimmy Hoffa is really buried....

Interesting. Keep us posted. Curious if it is incriminating why go through the hassle to stuff it in an oil container. Why not just burn it? But maybe someone found it in a garage and just considered it garbage without checking the inside and off it went into the garbage.

Definitely find out what it is. Could be worth big bucks if it's associated with famous case.
First I would prob bring to a photography store and ask them. They can prob transfer everything onto DVD for you etc. or just make legible copies.
Library would be good but I wonder if they would be more inclined to narc on you if it's something sensitive?
Definitely fill us in. That's prob one of the most interesting things I heard if someone finding. You got me very curious.

Could be someone had it........they died. New resident or relatives threw the container out.. Someone was trying to hide its contents for sure... Be careful who you show it to........

I love doing research & I'm pretty good at it, if you need some help? (Even though I'm not in California.)
You know this could be the beginning of a great book or movie! You should keep a journal about your adventure.
Just be safe while researching the microfilm. Flashing on the 'pelican brief'
I would guess the person who stashed this isn't alive anymore. (just hope they died of natural causes)
In the early 80's there were a bunch of issues with pollution & large companies in CA.
Once you figure out what it is, you will know what to do with it.
I agree that media may be your best option, but you never know

 real pirate
Someone went thru a lot of time and trouble to hide them......get out a good magnifing glass and see what you can see....then take some photos and call the FBI......local cops would do that anyway for microfilm.....good luck and let us know what happens.....HH
