I had an evening hunt yesterday with a buddy on a freshly harvested potatoe field. Easy to walk and dig, nice weather and wet soil like we all like. The second signal when on our way was this beautiful 2th century roman eagle mount from an travel coach. It seems to be a rare find with not many reported and in this condition. The rest of the evening was slow some bits and pieces my buddy got a part of a fibula, part of a roman chest handle and two roman coins and i managed a terret ring for chariot reins, possibly roman too because of the context, but could be also iron age. We have fairly mild weather so we hunted till we quit in darkness...
Here are the finds. Enjoy!

I would say 'Very Rare' & have voted banner!

I have never seen one before & if it were broken I would have no clue where to start. As BB stated it is Museum Quality & I'm sure many would like it.

I knew it was only a matter of time with WestFront's 'on target' searching - BIG CONGRATS on a find of a lifetime. I have no idea on what site it is, but go & get more clues...

Thanks Cru! That was a great hunt for sure! I will look what the archies say when i turn my finds in in december. The site is beside a big roman road used over the complete roman occupancy. My guess was something like a station. But the finds there are sparse. But what turns up is amazing!

Oh wow, I did not notice that. I wonder what that may have symbolized?

That picture is great, now we can all see exactly where it when on the chariot.

My guess is the the wheat is a symbol for wealth. :dontknow:

The eagle is a very ancient relic unlike the lion figure relic unearthed this week , still we have something in common .. we both enjoy finding old relics ... Well Done ! Westfront

DAWG

Thanks DAWG! That lion was very nice! I take relics over a coin every day!

That is a very nice and RARE find indeed, what you have is a Roman Rein Guide 8-) not many Romans would have had something as ornate as that...I vote Banner on this one. :icon_thumleft:

Sometimes the best sites do hold very little clues about them, it could take you years to find the answers.:occasion14:

Congrats on the eagle, very nice and rare!!! HH, Mike

Thanks Mike! :occasion14: I believe that's one of the best finds i ever made. Not only extreme rare but also in an amazing condition and very little damage. To have a museum quality piece of history in my own collection is incredible. I will turn it in by the end of this year and wait a couple months to get it back... :crybaby2:

I did some research on this piece and it seems to be more rare than expected. The "Roemisch Germanisches Museum" in Cologne has two of the three known ones on display. The third is in an other museum. Here are some pics of the museum eagles and a replica of a roman travel coach where these mounts are used.

It seems that yours as well as the the two in the photo are all a bit different in design. You may have the only one of this type which is known! This is museum quality and a banner find for sure! I will nominate it for the banner! Congrats!

I can't believe this hasn't gone banner. And now I see you have #4 of ALL the known ones? Gold coins are cool. I'd like to find them too and they look nice on the banner. They made ten's of thousands of them. How many of these were there? 100's? 1800 years ago?
Come on Mods, this should be a no brainer. Wish I could vote twice.

I did vote & try & make the point, but I'm not surprised at how rare it is, only how great the condition it's in!!!!!

I think the main reason that this is not on the Banner, is lack of knowledge, on how rare a find it is. I don't mean this in a disrepetable way, but if the powers that determin a Banner find, don't know, then it won't make Banner, this includes potential voters, so it is up to the poster to provide the relative information.
But I do agree that it is worthy, I will try and add more info, perhaps Cru could also.

Westfront....as you have the terret ring from the same site, I sugest there might be another eagle rein guide there also, as these came attached to chariots in pairs, which is what this find is from.:icon_thumright:
