Finally something post worthy! Is there such a thing as 985 silver?

Went to work today for a few hours on the 1800s house my brother is renovating and did a little hunting on my break, this place has been good to me in the past, a v nickle, rosie, and a bunch of wheats, today in abut 30 minutes i scored this nice little pile. 2 wheats, a 44 merc, and this silver religous pendant marked 985, is there such a thing as 985 silver? Believe it or not but Mexico is well known for quality silver products. If it's stamped "Mexico" and has a ".900-.1000" number it's going to be real silver 99% of the time. If it's fake silver it will usually say so, such as being stamped with "alpacca" which means it's made from a non-precious alloy of copper, nickle, or zinc. You may also come across pieces stamped with a little image of a lama - which is an common hallmark of alpacca alloys and not real silver. Awesome score! .985 is a very high-grade and rarely used silver alloy!

Mexico does not hold itself to a high standard in the metals/jewelry business -you can put whatever you want on it government does not really care
they have marked silver 950 and 985 over the yrs to make it seem that their silver is higher content than the rest of the world
thing is - a lot of the time it is less than 925 - not to say that yours is - hopefully being on a relig. med. it is true
just a heads up - a lot of the tourist trade stuff is not up to the world standard
same goes for gold - Mex. produces a lot of fake gold - some times no gold at all in it
other times their 10k is 9k - 14k is 12k - they find ways to skim - just an FYI
