My son and I took advantage of a spring like day today to get in several hours sifting at an old house site we have been working for a couple of years. Sifting is slow work,
but the payoffs make it all worth while. Here is a photo of our sifter, reset and ready to go:

Here is a photo of me all set and ready to go:

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to get any more photos after the batteries died, but here are some pics of the finds we made today. We also found many old nails and nondescript pieces of iron and tin, not shown.

Sometimes sifting is the best way to go. I like your setup.

I would love to try that on some of the fields over here, but not much chance, the farmers wouldn't like it. Never mind I'll just watch how you guys do it:laughing7:, great finds mate, keep it up.

What do you do? Do you just start digging and sift through the dirt or do you detect the area first? Good finds.

The area we are searching is the main house area, and is loaded with large rocks, as though the house imploded when it fell. We carefully remove the rocks as we go, noting any structural suggestions that give us clues as to how the house might have been built originally. We so far have found the firplacee base and hearth, and a foundation edge, both of which we will leave in tact. After the large rocks are removed, we run the dirt through the screen, capturing everything we can.
We have also identified the detached kitchen area which will require a sifting project all of its own.
