Desert is it. The strip is a concrete jungle. Unless you are there for more than a week or two, I would leave it at home. There are too many sights to see, things to do and restaurants to eat at to even consider risking the loss or dameage of the MD.

Out west of Vegas is a place called Redrock. I have found several shafts out there in the desert, but that was before I was into detecting. I have no clue as to what may be nearby. Howard Hughes' ranch is out there and there's no telling if the crazy fella stashed anything off his property. (His property is now a park, probably not OK to MD there, I'm just guessing)

There are several Indian sites to the east of Vegas, in the hills between Vegas and Lake Mead. I would try north of Sunrise mountain, but stay out of Nellis AFB!

And any of the parks nearer to the strip and downtown should be the oldest ones there.

One of my best friends for the last 30 years and I walked into a casino in Vegas about 4pm on a Friday night. We had stopped in Vegas one year for a little fun while we were on a 6 week camping trip across the West.

I sweet talked one of the casino floor girls who is watching the slots, and after a few compliments to her she told me to try a certain slot machine, that it was due to pay. Sure enough after about $20 of feeding it out comes couple hundred $. I went back to her thanked her and gave her a $25 dollar tip and talked some more. Another 10 minutes or so she points out another machine tells me to try it, same thing again, $20-$25 later, another couple hundred $ kicks out. I gave her another $25 tip. She then tells me how to play the slots. How to watch people play a machine and after so long of watching a machine when it is open again to go try $25 and see what happens.

Winnings from the slots financed our black jack and we were up about $2000+. Unfortunately our friends Jack and Chevis joined us at the tables and the last thing I remember is the black jack dealer telling us to go home while we were winning.

We stumbled out about 1pm Saturday afternoon, (had no idea it was even daylight, much less 1pm) with not a dime between the two of us and the worlds worst hangover. But I must say, I left with one of my favorite memories of my lifetime so far, broke or not broke.

Don't know where to metal detect, but I do know where to have a good time ;) Unfortunately, my Mustang Ranch tee-shirt fell apart years ago. ;D

Unless your going to be there for a week or more just go and enjoy the night life and watching the people.

You wouldn't happen to be a Gulf War Veteran by chance, apparently they give free rides to vets.

Might need to strap-on a 2 X 4 ;D

Im going to vegas friday for the weekend, does anyone know any good spots to metal detect, thanks.

Have spent some time in Vegas, but not for MDing.

If you get the urge to hit a Casino though, try the Orleans ( off the main strip )
It is a favorite of the locals & has an AWESOME Buffet !! ;)

Nope too old for Gulf War. I was in the Airforce from 67-71, stationed in Kadena AFB Okinawa for 18 months. We were supporting the ground forces in Vietnam and a couple other South East Asia countries with our B-52's. I got to ride the B52's as my job was to draw what the bomb release points would look like on radar.

Some of the older Vets on here may remember Arc-Light......................Carpet bombing......

We had no free rides on our return........ :(
