Mitchell, Go to the largest library in your county. Go to the local history department. If there is a helpful clerk there tell them you are interested in the Civil War history of your county. Don't tell them anything about digging, treasure hunting, artifacts or metal detecting, that could cut off their cooperation with you.

Read - read and read some more. If there are maps make copies. If there are written descriptions of events make copies. If there are books on local history check them out and take home and read. Locate older maps of the county, 1850-1920 range maps that have the roads and houses in those days, if they are in the library make copies for yourself. You need to spend about 10 hrs on research for every hour with a metal detector in hand to be consistantly sucessful.

No one is going to give up a good hunting site to you. You are going to have to ferret them out yourself. There is a lot of satisfaction of finding out about a potential site, researching it and then finding it on the ground yourself. You do that work and you won't be wanting to tell the world where it is. Good Luck!

Lots of Civil War activity there during the Skirmish at Dyersburg. Just go south down Rt 636 until it intersects with Pine Lane and look over to your right at the pasture there. Walk about 20 feet in and there is a belt plate under the fourth cow pie. -Buck

If you have to ask if it's illegal, then it probably is. Just ask around, do research and most importantly just make sure you have permission before you go hopping fences!
