Googled and came up with William & Mary or William iii...I kinda see something on the other side .. but can't see a date...New member in RI

You may also find more old coins in that same area! Hope you return there soon. If you don't have a camera, you can scan your coins instead. Andi

Yep,I'd say you have a William III at least.
Too bad it's so corroded; but being near the beach (and salt water?) would do that to any copper coin.
You're very lucky to be able to ID it at all.
Never the less, an outstanding historical find !

That is some exceptional beginner luck, Rob M! I'm still trying to break into the 1700s for coins and I've been at it for years. You've done even better with your first! Congratulations, welcome to TNet, and have fun with your new Ace 350.

Nice Find. I had a serious streak of beginners luck when I started.
Either William or William & Mary. try a pencil rubbing and a talcum powder treatment to see possible details
Congrats :)

1600s find is Fantastic! Go back there, there will be more to find! Don't worry about the cleaning. It is as good as it'll get. And anytime you get a William or William/Mary that has enough detail to identify, that's a great day. Folks don't break the 1600s often while metal detecting. Enjoy the rush!

Cheers,

Buck
