Been finding lots of cool stuff lately - too much to post - found the top portion of an exploded (either parrot or dyer) artillery shell - you can see where the fuse was - already run some electricity thru it and hot waxed it. Also found a neat Austrian cleaning jag used by civil war soldiers and a musket nipple cover or wrench. Found a neat flat bullet - looks like it was cut smooth flat and a pic of a few other bullets - Found over 60 bullets the last few weeks. Also found a real cool Mississippi Infantry coat button made by Hyde & Goodrich of New Orleans in pretty decent shape- (would like some advice from my fellow tnetters as to how to clean or not to clean at all) - Hope you enjoy the pics - Thanks for looking - love this hobby. Also a 1891 IH Penny

great finds, clean that button with a dry/wet toothbrush and maybe a dilute lemon juice solution but rinse and dry it well if you use lemon juice

...if you use lemon juice(which from what I can tell, isnt going to do much for your button)use baking soda after to neutralize the citric acid

Too me the button looks like it just needs hot water and a brush.. I seen too many MDers try all sorts of stuff to clean a button like this and end up doing more harm then good. The back of the button and the backmark are in great condition. Never tried the lemon juice, gonna have to experiment with that..

Very rare and awesome button find. Also talked with a friend in Vicksburg and he was leaning toward a Dyer shell as well. We still looking and trying to find out for sure though. Great finds no doubt.

All are great finds [these days]....Great save on that M.S. button 10 or more years and it might have crumbled in to pieces also a tip on cleaning the less the better & if you choose to use lemon juice or any type of cleaner ,expose the item to the cleaning agent a little at a time & never submerge over night "MY OPINION" .Keep diggin the good stuff Davers
