Colonial goodies!! 18 buttons, 3 parts to cuff links, buckle, copper and MORE!!!

I went out to a spot right in behind where we work at in Winchester, VA today. Last Thursday I found a few early colonial buttons and colonial buckle. The goal today was to work through the trash and dig everything. This site is loaded with trash, modern bullets and pull tabs and twist caps. Going slow, gridding and digging everything sure paid off. I dug 18 buttons, a few with beautiful designs. The large button with the design on is probably my best colonial button ever. I also dug a worn colonial copper, but what makes it unique is it looks like they scratched an X into it. It's definitely of period because the scratched part has the right patina. I also dug 3 separate parts to cuff links. All with nice designs on them. One is broken in half, but still has the loop and metal piece that connected the two together. I also found a beautiful buckle. I've seen these posted and I have just fallen in love with them and wanted so badly to dig one and today I did!! I'm guessing these are some sort of shoe buckle, am I right? There was this pottery, or brick, clay? stuff all in the ground. I'm guessing it's pottery. Found an iron knife and also got a little CW lead that was mixed in with the bunch of stuff. This was an awesome day and surely wasn't expecting all of these good targets out of that trashy site!! Yeah, man. Thanks for that! I did record some of the finds, not all of them though. Battery on the camera hasn't been lasting long for some reason lately. Thanks for looking and look out for a video tomorrow probably. HH

Thanks. I thought it was gonna be more frustrating than anything, but the day was beautiful and it wasn't bad digging all the targets. Actually enjoyed it, considering I made out quite well. I actually haven't researched it. It was just a spot close to where we work that we were given permission to hunt and have stumbled on a couple spots with colonial era finds. HH

Yeah, that's cool. The buckle and the large button is my favorite. I just couldn't believe I dug the buckle when I have been admiring the recent similar buckles that have been posted. Some are bigger and some are smaller. I assume they are shoe buckles, but I'm not sure. I need a book on colonial era buckles and buttons so I can try and date them better.

I forgot my headphones today and with all the trash(and good targets) the ole F75 sure was chattery and sounded like it was gonna blow up at points. lol HH

That was a great hunt Matt with some really nice, early finds. I think I mentioned that slowing down and being patient in the iron and trash can pay big dividends which it did for you today. Thanks, Bill. It did pay off very well. There was still some high, iffy tones that I didn't dig. I'll be back for sure.

Those are some beautiful finds. I have wanted a complete colonial buckle for years, and never managed to find one. Great stuff.

Nice finds Matt, love the cufflink and buttons with designs. I would think your buckle is a knee buckle by it's size.
