Hey everyone.... I posted this in the "What Is It" section on here because I am not 100% sure but I'm pretty sure it is a pencil, today I was out hut digging and dug this about 2 feet in the ground... Im thinking it is some sort of pencil holder with the pencil still inside it??? I have never come across this before :dontknow:, it is about 2 inches of brass tube with a wooden pencil like thing inserted in the tube, you can see a wooden pencil like thing @ the end there.

The top of the artifact is wooden and came off while I was cleaning it which then I saw the pencil or whatever it is inside the brass tube, and on the side of the artifact is something wooden with a hole in it almost as a keyring type thingy, at first I thought it was a medical syringe but it isnt, the camp I was hunting in was visited a lot by news reporters and photographers in 1862 and this union hut may have been where a reporter or photographer stayed during the winter months because I did not find any cw military type artifacts in the hut only broken pieces of glass, a toe plate that looked like a civilian used, two broken pieces of a fork, a mangled up brass comb and then this piece... This camp was one of the more healthier camps in Stafford during the CW than most regiment camps were in the area. I am still in the process of cleaning it up.. Thanks & HH:occasion14:

After further research I think I have concluded this is a Slated pencil with the metal holder still attached! a first for me and have never heard of anyone else I know digging one though im sure many have turned up in CW camps before!

nice find congrats

Thanks Wildman... Just wish I knew 100% what it was or what kind of pencil it was, I have seen some CW era pencils before but none like this, maybe I just wasn't looking hard enough, this is will more of less take some time to research! :occasion14:
