"SAILOR'S GULLY ROAD COURT HOUSE AND LOCK UP"

Gold rush started in Eaglehawk in 1854,the first person to find gold was a sailor who ,like many other jumped ship at Port Philip 200 miles south and then traveled by foot to the gold fields.By 1855 there were over 65 ships lay in port without crews. Thus the name has stuck ever since "Sailors Gully Road".Gold is still mined in this area and has not stopped for a 152 years.

yesterday i went to the open area near the old court house ,which has not been used since 1966.Due to the dry conditions the grass has all died and the top soil here has turned to powdery dust. This makes for easy digging and really easy to cover up holes. ;D ;D ;D.This open area was once a tent city of merchants and importers who lined the access road to diggings a short distance away from the gold feilds.Lots of junk like fencing wire and bottle tops[crown caps].Got a little clad and a token 'ROBERT HYDE @ CO" 1861

      Thanks for looking  t.p
