Once again I'm told a public school is private property and I'll have to leave.
First of all the gate was open and there were people playing softball. A co-ed game of various ages. Looked public to me.
Then when the softball players went to leave the gate was locked. These poor people had to climb a 7-8 foot fence because they couldn't find a way out. Two of the couples couldn't make the climb and wandered off trying to find a way out. I don't know what happened to them.
Now I'm all alone and I figure if I have to climb a fence I'm going to stick around and make it worth my while.
Then some nut comes along in his golf cart on the other side of the fence. He tells me I'm on private property and I'll have to leave. He says, we've been wondering who's been digging holes out here.
Yeah well it wasn't me. That was my first trip to this place. I drove 45 miles to get there.
Plus I'm very careful about leaving the least amount of trace that I've been there.
I asked the guy who he is. He say, GOD!
I'm like geesh what an idiot. I asked the guy to unlock the gate so I can get out. He wont do it. He makes me walk all the way across campus to another gate and opens that. Then he looks all pissed off because it took me too long to walk over there.
He's just dang lucky nobody got hurt climbing over that fence.
I could go on but I wont. grrr.

Anywho, I went to a park a couple miles a way and found this silver ring. =)

That's just the problem. It doesn't matter who dug the holes. EVERY-one with a MD is the blame. I wonder why they don't use the same logic on the roads. First person who runs a stop sign and THAT'S IT! Nobody can drive anymore! I sympathize but it is our lot. Unless we're going to stand our ground when told that we must leave, by saying, prove it! We are going to have to tuck tail and leave.

If the place is private property and we didn't get permission, (written), then we deserve being chased. BUT, if it's a PUBLIC school and it's NOT school hours, we pay the same taxes as any person who thinks they're "god". In my younger days, I'd just smile and wave and keep hunting. Funny, nobody ever came back and physically escorted me out. Nowadays, I have such a wide array of grounds to hunt, (by permission), if I'm asked to leave, I ask why and then, I leave.

You went 45 miles to get there? Was it listed as a public school?

Better luck next time and great ring! One you wouldn't have found if you hadn't been "chased". ;)

HH!

Whadifind, yes the school is totally public. It's the local high school.

I definitely let the guy know what I thought.

I told him I was going to complain about him to the city. You can't just lock people in like that because you think YOU make the rules.

I woulda just kept my headphones on and kept swingin'. That guy sounded like a real vinegar douche. Public is public and it sounds like you went at an appropriate time.

Nice find on the ring!
Too bad the local enforcer took out his angst on you. I don't think it's legal to lock people in like that, what if someone was injured or fell ill?
Public is public, and he is not the man. I have had nothing but positive encounters so far, one guy came right up and watched me dig up a penny...
I could tell he lived nearby and was maddoggin me, so I ignored him first, then made friends with his dog as it tried to mark my Tesoro, and just started small talk with him like we were neighbors... Turned out he works in the same industry as I do, and once he saw my carefully replaced plug, then the quick poke and flick of another coin, he was cool with me digging "his" park. I handed this lady a dog bag the other day, when she was just going to walk away and leave her dogs treasure, and I thought for sure she would get offended and hassle me for digging, but she just thanked me and asked me if I had found anything valuable... We had a nice talk about german shepards.
Guess it's better to avoid negative impressions and conflict, but if someone is being a dick and trying to lock me in or out of a public space, I might not represent well.
You should report that dude, his actions could have caused injury, or prevented help from getting in if needed...

I've had a few run-ins myself. Though I would really like to lay into the guy for asking me to leave, I usually calmly walk away with little words. It's kind of a "damned-if-you-do/damned-if-you-don't" situation. If you stand up for your rights, you look like a belligerent a**hole, but if you leave, the MD society looses another battle.

Here you have to go and get forms to be filled out by the principal of each school to hunt on them and you have to meet each one and explain what and how and when you plan on detecting the property.

But, will you report him? A bluff works on the spot but does nothing if they don't believe there's any real penalties.

One thing you might have done is when he locked you in and wouldn't open the gate so you could get out. Maybe, you should have just fallen down and had that attack that a simple walk to your car and your medicine could have prevented. But, because you had to walk ALL - THE - WAY down to this other gate where he uses a key on the same keyring to open and let you out. Well, it was simply too much for you AND it was ALL HIS FAULT! Wonder what his employers would think of that lawsuit. ;)

Better luck next time.

Always have a back up plan too. :)

A beauty of a ring for your trouble with a little g god. As for that school, if it's paid for by taxes, then the grounds and all are public property. But you have done the wise thing I reckon.

For obvious reasons a lot of schools have become ultra sensitive about people on the property.

Not just inside but anywhere on the property. Given the fact that you can't turn the news on anymore without seeing some nut at a school, this may be the norm for the future.

Nice ring!

Have found it a Lot less of a Problem to just wait till Summer when school is out and go then . Also Like stated with all the Things going on in the schools today even though you pay taxes the School District has a Legal obligation to protect the Students and watch the property even though you stated you were searching I guess while school was out . Here where I live I have searched a couple school grounds with no problem but the went to an older school that I know was built in the 50's and there is a sign out front that states school property under servellience so I kinda blew it off and started searching around the old trees with concrete curbs and in about 20 mins here comes the PD they ask to see my ID and I promply gave it to them . then the officer tells me he has seen me at the local parks and other schools and knew I meant no harm but this school had been burglerised so often they hired a serveliience company to watch it so I said No problem I would not go back . Officer Thanked me an gave me a tip on an older place to search and gave the owners name but have not been able to get a call back from him yet Anyway sometimes it just pays to rethink the time and Place
