I have been detecting a flower bed that is being dug up. it is at an old house location. So far I have found mostly clad coins. I went out Thursday night trying to beat the weekend rains. I dug what I thought was a crusty clad dime. I was cleaning my finds and I couldn't see the date on the coin. It was encrusted pretty badly. It had soaked for 2 days and wasn't getting any better. I rubbed some baking soda on it and noticed a silver spot. I finished cleaning it and much to my surprise I had a beautiful 1917S Mercury dime. Silver is not normally encrusted in our soil, but I will check all of my coins more closely now. Pix were taken using my 10x loop held over my Iphone camera lens. Thanks for looking.
Charlie

Lovely job of cleaning, the dime looks beautiful. I had the same situation with a seated dime I found last spring. It came out so brown and crusted, I thought it was a Lincoln penny until I noticed it was a tad smaller. Unfortunately, a big portion of the metal was gone. Learned the lesson that you always need to check out your finds.

Thanks for the comments folks. It was headed straight to the clad jar. I hate I had to clean it, but it still came out really nice.
