"UNION WHALERS,CONFEDERATE RAIDERS AND 49ER GOLD REBELLION"

The years between 1850 to 1870 the following events took place but they didn,t happen in the U.S Seems american history was happening in Colony of Victoria {southern Australia}

Gold was found in Victoria 1850 and more than 600,000 gold-miners from 26 countries.Some 17,000 American 49-ers came from Calfornia .At the place known Bendigo some 5000 Americans mined gold for nearly 20 years then moved on to the Peru gold rush.1000 stayed to take up farming and trades.

In 1851 the british colonial government introduced a unfair gold tax on gold miners this lead to rebellion.At the famous battle of Eueka Stockade 3 amerians where arrested and many other where involved.

The 2nd rebellion was a peaceful but more than 3000 american miners signed the pretition.this rebellion was known as the Red ribbon rebellion.

With the decline of whale numbers in the north, hundreds of whaling ships sailed into the coastal water off Southern Australia and during the Civil War these union ships where attacked by Confederate raiders.

The British Empire sent more regiments to protect and sure up the Colony of Victoria.

By 1875 all british forces had left and Colony of Victoria formed its own forces from rifle regiments(civil) and private regiments and in Bendigo the local 38 th regiment was formed.

Today i went to the site of where the first 38th regiment was formed and the head quarters of the officers.The site is on a reserve used for no-thing and you can see the head-quarters at the top of the hill.The site is really clean and there was little rubbish and it took about 5 hours to go over.I found a Lee Enfield mark 1 303 shell ,Australian 3 pence (silver) and this is my 4th 1880 Colony of Victoria Armed Forces Button.These buttons unlike british buttons were never produced in as many numbers.They are becoming rare and date around 1880-1892.The Pic of the bell tower was the call to arms.

Hi all, The house in the following pic was owned by the Sinlair family.Stewart Mcguiness Sinlair born in bendigo 1855 and became the trade ambassador for the colony of Victoria and was friend and traveling partner too Dr Samuel Clemens[Mark Twain] Clemens came to Bendigo and the gold feilds several times and may have spent time at this location.Theres a text in his book called
"A Vagabond Abroad" which tells on his trip here.The house is in the same block as the reserve site but on the other site
