These finds are from my last 3 or 4 trips to my favorite field. This site has been hit by others before me but continues to give up goodies, usually only one per trip if I'm lucky, so I have to work for it. Its going to be increasingly difficult as those little purple flowers starting to poke up give me horrible allergic fits when they start to pollenate.

Anyway I was completly floored to find this French Royal Artillery button in this field. I'm pretty sure I know the French unit this came from. My first French RW button... Woohoo. Not to rub it in but the history in Virginia is wonderful. In this field alone I've found a Confederate Block A, a Union Eagle cuff button and this French RW button.

A few trips ago I found the Virginia Half Penny, my second in this field, but this one is pretty toasted. The worst of the three I have found.

The cut 1733 1 real was the first spanish silver I found in this field. Was quite surprised as it didn't sound that great. As it stands it's my oldest coin find.

Thanks for looking and good digs to you all.

Very nice button and congrats on an old silver! Are you sure it is an Artillery button?

That's a heck of a field Bob. You've done extremely well there with a wide variety of quality finds. And that French button is definitely from an artillery unit BTW. Keep pounding that place.

Thanks Westfront.

here is one of the few interweb sources I could find.
France Page

ROYAL CORPS OF ARTILLERY, 1776-1790
This is one of three very similiar button varieties issued to the rank and file of the French Corps Royale de L' Artillerie during the 1776-1790 period. During this period, this branch of France's army wore buttons like those of most regular line infantry regiments but bearing the number "64". In 1786, the Royal Corps of Artillery of the Colonies began to receive a distinctive button whose device included an upright anchor between the numbers "6" and "4".

I found a 64 Reg French button in Germany just like yours. Pretty cool and Spanish silver is always grand.
