1820's militia buckle, how to determine authenticity and value?

First post on the forum...

Owner of this buckle inherited it from his parents, and has asked me to help with identification. From what I've been able to find, it's an 1820-1840 militia buckle (or a reproduction). It has 13 stars above the eagle, and 14 cannonballs under the left hand cannon. The banner above the eagle reads "E Plurbius Unum"

I've been browsing every antiques site I can find today, and haven't yes come across any indication that it's a fake, but I really have no idea. Any way to tell for sure, and is this something a collector would be interested in? Thanks!

U.S. waist belt plate , regular Army use from 1815 to 1819 and then was used for Militia's after 1819 to 1825 . nice plate

That is a nice find back in the 1830,s it was used by many troops from different states sometimes called in the
1820's to 1840's New York Militia Belt Plates, NY troops will have the state motto EXCESIOR on it. There are many different styles of milita plates.It looks to be the real deal . Good find Jim

Thanks guys. Any suggested resources for value of something like this? A book I could buy or check out? Owner will be glad to hear it doesn't seem to be a reproduction. Can a jewelry shop double check, or should I be looking for an antique dealer?
