First of all, thanks to everyone for the tips and guidance on beach hunting.

I got to spend a few days on Padre Island last week. Two of the days were bright sunshine and there were at least 10 folks out there with MD's, but most days were a bit cloudy and wet so I had quite a bit of beach to search without much competition.

Total count was:
1 Men's 10K gold Ring (My first gold)
$13.48 in Clad
about 100 coins I can't identify until I get the marine gunk off of them
a couple of small silver rings
a silver button/medallion
a few nice relics
lot's of trash than went straight to the waste can
a few lumps that I cannot ID at this time.

Thanks again to everyone for their advice which helped make the beach hunt a good one.

Nice work! Too bad I don't live near the beach, I'd be there often. It's amazing what that water can do to some of that metal!

Keep it up and don't forget your sunscreen!

Great Finds! What part of Padre Island were you at? I usually hunt South Padre a couple times a year. Getting ready to go back in April after Spring Break.

Don

I was staying with a friend and was limited in my search area since I didn't always have a car and would get dropped off and picked up later. Because of that I got dropped off at the Bob Hall pier and just worked my way north and south from there depending on how much time I had and how much I felt like walking. I was also probably helped by the thunderstorms that blew in one night. I seemed to find a lot more the next two days after the storm.

Am going to start working on the 10 or so chunks today to see what is hidden within. They all gave good readings but are just so crusted over I have no idea what they might be.

I wondered about my old XLT (I've had it for about 8 years but used it maybe 1 time a year until a few months ago, but it did a great job. I made two modifications to the standard B&J program. I was getting a lot of "clutter" from the surf so I turned the AC Sensitivity down from 64 to 57/58 and I upped the Pre-Amp Gain from 2 to 4. That seemed to work best.

The beach was worked pretty well as I did see folks out there on the 2 very nice days I was there. There was one group of 2 couples who seemed to have a system for working an area of beach, but if it was a system, I couldn't figure it out. It looked to me like they were just wandering around ;)

The neat part about the gold ring is I found it in an area that they had searched for a couple of hours. I moved in after they left and did a grid search and did very well in that area.

Oh, do you know what a good trick to do to the zincs? just hit it with a hammer and most of the junk will shatter, also, vinigar and salt to fix the others

Great finds, WTG!!!
Neat looking button?, and the gold is always great...
Some people on the forum call those coins covered with all the gunk, "Cookie coins", you just never know what's going to be inside...
Continued Good luck, & Happy hunting~
