Someone on the bottles forum today posted about some glass they "found" with their MD.

Well, today I was bottle hunting that same creekside dump, and I found this:

It appears to be a .22 revolver. It's far too heavy to be a toy. It's soaking in ACV to remove some of the rust, unless one of you has a better (safer) and faster way to do it.

Looks like a candidate for an ACV bath to me. Nice find.

Thanks. I did try to brush it some and used a small pick on some of the crustier chunks but with little improvement. It's soaking in ACV now, and it will probably stay there for a few weeks.

Apple Cider Vinegar. Low tech, slow process c-rust remover. need to let it soak for a few weeks.
HH

Not just low-tech but also low-impact. Acetic acid is a very weak acid so there's little chance of damage to the item. When I get most of the crustier rust off I'll then soak it in BarKeepers Friend (oxalic acid) which is a little stronger but should remove the rest of the corrosion the ACV didn't. As a finisher I might try my CLR.

The final question is, should I spray it with some kind of protectant? I certainly don't want it to rust again. I do have some Rust-o-leum spray lacquer.
