Hi everyone, Just wanted to join the chat being a new member and also new at metal detecting. I wanted to wait until I had a interesting find before posting my 2007 finds. Today was the day. I was relic hunting and thought I had 2 colonial buttons when to my surprise one turned out to be a VA 1773 Halfpennies. I don't know much about them but after a quick Goggle am pretty happy with it. I may have to quit my day job to allow more quality dig time. :o I hope the pictures come thru okay. Hope this weekend brings more posts. ;D

Re: Virginia 1773 HalfPennie

Congrats to you Ronin on your find, and welcome to the TreasureNet. As you probably know, most people on the site love to see pics of the finds. It's also a great way to catalogue your finds and to hold on to the memories of your hunts. I'll be looking for more of your posts in the future, and good luck to you. 1800's is the oldest I have so far, so you're doing great.

Welcome Ron, you are certainly in one of the top hot spots in the country for finding anything from 1600's up through Civil War era stuff. Congrats on the Virginia Halfpenny and may more be coming your way.

Great finds. Say, what type of shell casing is that in the lower left next to the .22 cal shells? I found something that looks just like that in Middleburg, VA yesterday. It says 30.06 SPRG RP onthe back. I assume the SPRG is short for Springfield, but I don't know what the RP stands for. Could it be short for "repeater"? Certainly not CW era - there was a lot of cavalry action there, and the Union troops were equiped with Spencer carbines. But they were larger caliber than that - I'm assuming this is something from the first had fo the 20th century. Probably trash, but I'm curious to learn. I'm new at this too.

Re: Virginia 1773 HalfPennie

RP on the 30-06 casing stands for Remington Peters, manufacturer of the shell. This mark was used from about 1960 until the present.
