1893 columbian exposition find

Hello all I went back to a site where I had found a 174? george the II hibernian half penny. I admit I had dreams of pine tree shillings and flowing haired beauties popping right of the ground. well a 1 hour car ride and 4 hours of detecting got me a pocket full of relics plated spoon, butter knife an interesting button and a columbian expo complimentary watch fob from the keystone watch cover co. I thought it was an old dog licsense until i cleaned it up. I gave it to kenb to go with the silver half dollar he has from the same expo. Pics will be posted tomorrow hh to all

I have one of those columbian expo silver half dollars too. The fob looks cool. Sounds like it was worth the trip.

thanks pbk that is exactly what it looks like kenb is putting the pics on for me later today and it was worth the trip we got an artic blast last night and the ground is freezing up so it will be the last dig for awhile

The button is a late 19th - early 20th century dress button which was often produced in molded & dyed horn rather than metal, and depicts two cherubs holding a mirror or picture frame. Some versions actually had a steel or silvered brass "mirror" inset, and others had a tiny cameo-like portrait or a flower (usually a tulip) in the center.

Also, on some buttons the rosettes at the top and bottom of the oval were replaced with small heads said to be masks of Pan.

As a matter of fact, actual mirrors of the same design were also popular in that era, as shown in the photo of a modern repro below:

Nice find and piece of history

I like any of the old souvenirs from past events, nothing like having an old object that without a doubt you know the age of. A few years back I got my 1893 Chicago Exposition Souvernier, at the time I found it I had not idea what it was.

I put it in a Peroxide bath and it cleaned up beautifully to reveal that it was a Exposition souvernier and mine was representing the Liberty Bell (before it squashed in the ground).
