Capped bust half dime from same site.
Have you guys seen alot of silver that has spent over 150 yrs. in salt soaked sand? The flaking on the surface is quite common.
I have found silver Cobb's from the 1700's.. same thing.

sand usually drains so items are better preserved?I have found coins(silver, dating to the 1700's)but never from Salt conditions.......Silver doesnt flake...I should say,"I have never ever seen it flake"

I have never dug a silver coin in salt water so I have no idea but if you have found other silver from the same period in the same area with the same problem then I would think it would be a real coin. If you want send it to me and I'll "test it" for you I promise I'll send it back some day.

Scouts out!

Haha.
Nice!
Belive me.. if you have not hunted in saltwater conditions ..its effects are nothing like dry land or fresh water. Silver is always black from saltwater and your lucky if it hasn't become one with the corrosion.
Sometimes there just isn't anything left but a black lump.

The water drains and evaporates leaving salt behind..making the sand have a higher concentration then the water.
Its work just finding a detector that will compensate for that without constantly giving you false signals.

So if it was a counterfeit that would be a much rarer find. Anyways you slice it as in this case nice find. I do have some reales from the Atocha and they came out in clumps and globs. Nice find Gator looks like that at pro is working well for you.

I'm going to dip them in ducco cement mixed with acetone.
The same way I preserved many shell and bone artifacts thousands of years old..
It works great... "Gomer" solution.

Ahhh.. the Atocha.. that one sank in yet another hurricane off the Florida keys in 1622.
An interesting thing happens with shipwreck coins sometimes.
Those ships were full of other metals like Iron bronze and .. sheathed with lead at that time...those metals when in the saltwater in close proximity to silver will corrode much faster and actually protect the silver.
They kind of corrode for it..so it doesn't have to..LOL.

Just found an interesting fact about this coin.. its a reeded edge and also it reads " 50 Cents" on the obverse.
That was only spelled out like that for two years of the Capped Bust.

Not a counterfeit. That is what happens to silver that has been in saltwater for 176 years. I saw a mercury dime that was dug in saltwater once that was nearly corroded slick. Google "Cazador shipwreck" and you will see what 90% silver looks like after being in saltwater for 200 years. Great authentic find.

Great find bill! Hope we find the same when you get to NC!

Hey thanks Johnathan!
I'm planning on loading you up with lead..LOL.
We should do real well with civil war relics.. musket and Minie balls and hopefully coins and buttons too.
