That will happen have you tried a pencil and paper yet? Your right about it being a classic head so 1812 is possible. Another thing that has worked for me is to take a pencil and very very lightly go over where the date is. It will work some times

Scouts out!

Congrats on your first LC. That is pretty normal condition for a dug LC, maybe soak in the olive oil and use a tooth pic to try and get a date. More then likely it is to far gone.

I agree with the pencil rubbing idea. Use the side of the point as opposed to the point and rub very gently over the date area. Good luck. Congrats on the large cent.

Killer coin! dont worry about the date, its still cool to get one however, i know your frustration, I have 5 that i cant date, and one of em is a draped bust, i only know that because it has the 1/100 on the back and the head is facing the opposite direction as yours which is indicative of the draped bust

That's a great find ! Clearly a "classic head " 1808-1814 a short run series indeed , I think we see more "draped busts " found
than "classic heads" .

Your right I know I have found more draped busts than classic heads myself. I never thought about it.

WTG on your first Large Cent find! Date or no date it's an awesome feeling to finally get one! Plus you now know the style and range in years that it was minted.
