Welcome:hello:

No idea on the iron lump, but you may want scrap it in future, plenty more out there! (junk)

The buttons are a good start & are early 1800s.

Lipstick, I have no idea.

Have you gained permission for ploughed land yet?

Hi there

Thanks for the info, early 1800 buttons, not bad.

Does the lump look like iron to you? it is very heavy.

I think the lipstick is 1950-60, I have found advertising posters on eBay.

I have not got permission for ploughed land, I had a very hard time getting farmers and land owners letting me on their land.

Im in Walsall, West Mids and I was asking for permission right by where the Staffordshire Hoard was found. I bet they get it all the time.

Do you know of anywhere I could get permission?

Yes, it is a lump of iron.

The first farmers permission is always the hardest. It tends to snowball after that, if you get on well with the first one.

It sounds like you may have a hard time in that area. The way we normally ask is along these lines (I will leave out the bit about GPSing everything & making them maps, although this does help, but something your unlikely to do);
'I will show you everything I find, whether a button or a gold coin'
'I will share any Treasure (as discribed under the Act) 50/50'
'I will fill in all my holes, close gates etc & look out for any bad characters, like hare coursers etc'
'I will only detect at the times of the year that your happy & I understand that anyone with Shooting Rights will come first'
'I'm very new to this & I'm having a hard time finding land & I'm only interested in the history of the finds & not in selling them, therefore I hope to share some of the 'doubles' that I get' I will therefore start to build a small collection for you as well as myself.

Try some/all of the above.

thanks for the info, I have tried some of those but not all. I find some farmers say it is not their land, or the owner is out. I got the picture.

Trust is the hardest thing to gain. Many will have chased off Night Hawks. Once the word is out that your honest, then they will come to you. Because they want to know what the illegals were finding. Build your rep on honesty & you can't lose.

Many farmers are tenants & its important to ask for the 'landowners' details because some dishonest tenants will happily take your finds & if the landowner turns up, you have some explaining to do.
Remember getting a tel no. off a land worker or tenant is a foot in the door. You can ring & say you were given the number by 'Fred' (use first name of contact)

PS. download Google Earth & use the timeline to look at each field & spot the cropmarks. You can then target the farmer that owns them, it shows you know what your doing & will be successful.

I forgot the 2 most obivous:

Join the local Metal Detecting Club - hope they have club land or are willing to take a newbie out

Pay £12-25 for a day or weekend Metal Detecting Rally - I use these as a social event because I never do well with 400 people charging about. However, it does get you on land.

NB. Now the best time to ask, as they are less busy, ask to start after the harvest.

Thanks for your information. I will look into joining the local club. Are memberships generally free or do they require an annual fee?

Most clubs will make you pay for Public Liability Insurance which is included in the membership of either the FID or NCMD:
The Federation of Independent Detectorists

Index

Both are pretty cheap, they then may want between £10-20 a year, so maybe about £40 max per year??

I'm not a member of any club, so I maybe out of date.

If your still struggling after harvest, I maybe able to help.

Hi....:hello2: welcome to Treasurenet. Sure it's hard to find land, you are a complete stranger knocking at a farmers door, suspicion is there first thought, this you have to over come, but you will get better the more you do it....keep at it, there will always be one that says yes, just takes a bit of time.

I'm brand new to this, but that lump of iron looks just like a meteor that a guy showed me a few months ago... i remember it being very heavy for its size. Does it have an odor? Research meteors characteristics.

I think i will keep it until I can find out a way to clean it up properly. Although it may not be a meteorite it is still a lump that I found in the ground :)

Thanks.
