Went detecting today and found an 1892 Barber Dime early this morning and a couple Civil War Bullets, then just as I was about ready to quit for the day, I got a solid coin hit with my E- Trac and dug it up and it was a New Jersey Copper. I can't get a date off of it, but I read they only made them for a few years in the 1780's. Needless to say, I will be going back to that area soon! Lol

Congrats on your first NJ copper. I found my first last year and have found 4 more since. Now you'll know what you have every time you see that shield.

Thanks! I had no idea what it was when I first saw it. I thought it was a token or something until I researched it on the web.

Can you take a pic of the obverse and post it. Don in SJ will try to ID it for you. Nice find!

Here is a couple pics of the other side of the coin, but this side of it is in pretty bad shape. I can make out a few of the letters and a little bit of the outlines. But I can't read a date at all.

Congrats on your first Colonial Copper. A New Jersey is a good one to start with!

Congrats on your first colonial and getting a NJ makes it extra nice! I played with your photos and just not enough detail there to even give you which year, although I suspect 1787, but that is just a wag. Nowhere enough features can be made out for me to even have a general idea of the year and then variety, sorry, perhaps different lighting might help some but it is fairly corroded. Suggestion, never use flash if you can and try to use a non-reflective background, like a non glossy blue or red book cover or felt like material...
If you would not mind, could you PM me with what county and state found in for the survey I am doing on all ground found NJ coppers.
Thanks
Don

Congrats on your 1st colonial! Very nice copper to start with. The NJ copper still eludes me but it's not for a lack of trying.
