Made the long hike to where I found a 1785 constellatio copper only to get a few hours in before the batteries died and I forgot to bring some. Pretty disappointed with myself as I am usual good when it comes to that kind of stuff. I did manage some good finds though and will be back out tomorrow.i was stoked whe. I seen that the shoe buckle was complete. Never thought I'd see a whole one. Also pulled one of my nicer tombacs with a design. Few other buttons some lead and a broken thimble. I also think that I found a side plate from an old rifle. Any thoughts on that? It has a nice design on it but can't get good enough photos with my phone. Hopefully ill have some good stuff tomorrow when I get back. Thanks for looking.

Does seem to be a side plate from an old rifle but since I'm not too familiar with them I would like to hear what you guys think.

Some more nice digs Greylock. It is hard to find a complete shoebuckle but you got a nice one there. Great tombac too. Can't help you with the side plate thingy....it looks like one...let's hope it is.

Thanks. This site has a thick cover right now but there are plenty of open spots to check out.

Someone else has some good spots too.

Congrats on a complete shoe buckle. That is still on my wish list.

Google search "serpent side plate" and you are bound to find an example that is similar. And let me tell you, those are HARD to find complete. Complete shoe buckles I see posted one every couple weeks on this forum but side plates of that style I don't think I see one per year that are complete rather than pieces.

That is an all star find, IMO.

Cheers,

Buck

Thanks everyone. I was surprised to see it come out in one piece as well it had a little bend to it but straightened back out with little damage.
I went back to the same site today and found another shoe buckle ( almost complete) some buttons and a nice watch winder. Ill post later on.

Buck, thanks for the search reference. Found many similar ones. Now ill know what it is if I ever see another.

Hi Tom - Just catching up here after a busy w/e. That buckle can be dated to a pretty narrow date range from what i understand by that crossbar on the chape. Apparently it could be removed from the shoe and used to pull a cork out of bottle and the bar was used as a reinforcement to keep it from breaking. A similar one was found by fmerg here last year--you might want to search his threads for more info. Hopefully someone will corroborate the information. Are there any other markings on the buckle such as stars to help ID the manufacturer? Does the chape still pivot? Super finds brother! :)

Have you found any military buttons at that site? I have the exact buckle but silver and found at a Rev War camp...
Great recovery on the complete buckle and side musket plate...

No military buttons. This is a huge site but need to wait for a few frosts before I search it properly.

Check it out :icon_scratch: jersey hunters seldom , get buckles and rifle side plates complete and intact down here , just frames and pieces , even the watch winder is better than most . What a fantastic sight , that place has some prime find potential , most settlers where dirt poor but your guy's may of had a few bucks $$ yes ,
frost is almost on the pumpkin .
You are lucky to have that area to search .
Thanks for the pics
