Was in at friends place today to see what new coins he got in, no coins but bought a gun collection. He really don't know anything about guns and has several for sale with more coming. I spotted these two pistols that to me seem to be from the 1800's The single gun pictured is .44 with a ser. number 66251 on bottom of grip. No other markings that I could see. I know he will drop the price if I wanted it to maybe 100, but I know nothing about these. He says its a real shooting gun. So I thought to come here in hopes of some one may know what these two guns are, date, and what their worth.

If you need more info, let me know what to look for and I can check, and post here tomorrow.
Thanks

I can't tell you much from the pics here, but the single gun is a Model 1851 Colt Navy , The other pic is an 1858 Remington New Model Army, another '51 Colt, and an unknown boot pistol. I need good closeups of all the guns, plus all the markings on them to tell you more, but from the price and overall appearance, I suspect they are all modern repros.

175 is a good price for a repro as long as it's in good shooting condition.

I will go and try and get every detail on both guns and repost tomorrow or later today. I liked the guns and thought of buying them if they were the real mCcoys. Even if they are repros, are the worth 150 - 200? Like I said I have no idea on this older stuff. Heading back now to get what details I can get.

Yeah I'd buy them for that price, but before you do, check the barrels and cylinders for corrosion. If they were ever shot and not cleaned they could be a real mess inside. Also make sure the cylinders on the Colts turn and index correctly when you pull the hammer back, the hand and spring in some repros can be weak, and if someone over loaded it, they can break. It's about a 20 dollar part to replace, but they have to be fitted to the gun which is a very time consuming project, and you really need to know what you're doing to get it right.

Ok here's more pics. Don't think their colts. No markings really to speak of, but I got pics of makers marks or whatever. I'm only interested in the first two pistols, but did take pics of the other guns also.

Yup, all modern repros. I'd really like to have the flintlock pistol. You can get an idea of what they sell for new at dixiegunworks.com Like I said so long as they're in good working order it's a safe buy.

EDIT: I just noticed the frizzen spring is broken on the flintlock. That could be a serious problem since its a japanese made gun, and finding a replacement that matches might not be easy. I'd offer around 75 for it

Ok, thanks for the info Nola Ken. I am most interested in the first pistol with the ships engraved on the cylinders. Tell me more about this gun, whats is imitating? What Brand year etc? Whats the estimated value? He wants 175, but sure I may be able to do 100. The other pistol not to bad either, may buy both pistols and not real interested in the others.

And Nola Ken If your interested in that flint lock, I can see what his bottom dollar is on it. Your only 2.5 hrs from me, and we could do some detecting if you decided to come. I am always over there in Nola, as my brother lives in Pearl river. He digs up a lot of ground in N.O. doing construction, I plan sometime to hit some of their sites.

The first one is a repro of the 51 Colt Navy. It is a kit gun that was never properly finished. The rough look of the frame tells me that the metal was never polished out, and the grip wasn't sanded to fit. I would think it's likely an Italian made gun. Being that it needs to be finished, (fine sand, polish and blued, plus grip sanded and stained) 100$ would be about the top I'd pay. Brand new the kits run around 200$. Make sure the bore is clean, and the inside of the cylinder isn't corroded.

The second is a repro of the '58 Remington New Model Army. Again I'm seeing signs that it is an unfinished kit gun, lack of bluing on the cylinder, unfinished grip etc. It's a nice short barrel version, but does need to be finished. The kits run around the same 200$ range, and I'd offer around 100 knowing it needs work.

Having said that, the work involved to finish them isn't hard, and basically requires a dremel, medium, fine and ultra fine sandpaper, steel wool a cold blue kit, and stain, plus being willing to spend the time involved. Dixie Gun Works sells all the supplies you'd need, and when you're finished you'll have a nice set of guns that you had done yourself, which I think is well worth it, but then I just like building black powder guns. They'd make a good project for the winter.

I'm interested in the flintlock, let me research it a bit, and I'll shoot you a PM later.

Here's a pic of my '51 Navy that I built from a kit It's pretty much the same as the one you're looking at. They're really nice guns, and fun to shoot.

Kuger, I'm mainly interested in the flintlock. I've been kicking around the idea of building one for quite a while now, and this one just seems like it would be fun to completely overhaul and make it into a really pretty gun. The boot pistol is cool, and I hope you manage to make a deal on it.

Definitely, they are neat. The one I built had a heck of a kick, and was accurate to about 3 feet......but it would be great for a display
