Yeah, kinda looks like the little sheet music holders for marching bands, the kind that hook onto the instruments.

They're called liars... and they are for marching bands usally made of nickle or silver plated brass but some of the older ones were made of silver.

Wow, tree root digs can be cool and a pain in the ... Got a merc dime from the middle of a three inch root once. Bullets and nails are the usual suspects signalling from wood both live and dead.

I have been carrying a small folding saw (camping type) for about a year now in my detector bag. The area where my hunting partner and I have been hunting for the last year and a half, has quite a lot of tree roots at a shallow depth. The saw certainly comes in handy on occasion. My partner found a bucket bail that had a root growing around it. We had to saw it out of the ground.
