BuckleBoy I'm glad I was sitting down when you told me the potential value. Can you recommend someone who is able to straighten.

Gary1963, I live in Richmond. If your in Central VA, hopefully you are close to Ashland. Another member on here told me about a guy up there, Ran Hundley, who has a shop right on Rt. 1. The shop is called Sgt. Rikers. I met Ran a few weeks ago and he was very nice and very helpful. If your into the civil war, its worth the trip just to check out his showroom! He might not be able to fix it, but I have a feeling he could get you to someone who could. Also, Cowardins Jewelers on Broad St. In Richmond may be a resource. Those guys are big into metal detecting and could probably help. Let me know if you need phone #'s or addresses.

This was posted by Iron Patch in the linked topic posted by Iron Patch, it's the name and contact info for a person that can repair the plate.

Now that my friend IS the best find I have seen on this forum in quite a while! Simply beautiful with incredible rarity and great history! I don't think what you have found has quite sunk in yet. To get a better appreciation of the rarity and value of that breastplate place that relic on the site Treasurespot.com and get ready for some responses! No question .......BANNER worthy!!! Speechless!!! Devonrex

Thanks, The comments that I've heard is that it is rare. The history being circa 1850 ? pre CW The only info being a picture that Iron Patch has shared, another on relicman.com that was for sale. I'm going to have it look at and inspected for repair if possible.

These cross-belt plates date to the 1840s time period and are extremely rare... Bring it to the expert Sgt. Riker like that one poster posted or to Nick Harris "Regimental Headquarters" located in Stafford,Virginia off Route 1.. If you want Nick to look @ it for you, please let me know and I can setup a time for you.

Gary - I don't want to come off as being "nosey", but can you (without giving away the location) provide some more detail as to what kind of location you found this at, i.e. - battlefield, farm field, old house site, etc. and the "general" area of VA? Again, a dream find for any Virginian to find and certainly worthy of banner IMHO.

Extremely rare I like the sound of that. Thanks for the recommendations. Sgt. Riker may be who I take it to.

Here are 1 from O'Donnell's buckle book and 2 from Kerksis buckle book. You can click on the photo 3 times to enlarge the photo and read it..O'Donnells book dates one from 1855-1861 and Kerksis dates the two in his book to 1840s time frame. Regardless def. civil war era.. The rarity in Kerksis book is "9" very high..

That is an awesome plate. Still amazes me the things we dig up out of the ground. Very rare plate indeed.

I would trust it to no one other than Robert McDaniel or Roland Frodigh. PM Tnet member VOL1266-X and he can give you Robert's contact info.

Cheers,

Buck
