WOAH!! I'll let the pros/experts on here confirm it, but it looks to me like a VA cross belt plate. I think they are very rare. I'll definiteley be watching this thread to see what happens...you might have an amazing find! Either way,AWESOME!

Seems a little small for a breastplate at 2.5 inches in diameter, but it's gotta be a breastplate.

I have seen and held VA sword belt plates. But I've never even seen a VA breastplate. My O'Donnell book is not handy right now, but I'm sure someone with a copy will ID that item for you shortly.

Cheers,

Buck

They are listed at 65 mm. Or 2.5"

Were they Pin-backed or lead-filled?

These VA breastplates have gotta be rare as they can be. I've seen a lot of fine VA relics, but never seen one dug.

This belongs on the banner, IMO.

Ridgeway has one on his site. References "Mullinax expanded edition, plate 437". Stamped brass with pin back.

The picture on the right is the back. Iron patch T-121 looks like it. The only other info I've found was that it was pre civil war, usually mount on a light web belt and was not suited for hard campaigning.

Never saw it. I would have replied if I had! Contrary to popular belief I don't look at everything that is posted on Tnet. Probably passed over it with a title like "i think i may have found something good." :D

I'll be honest, this plate belongs on the finds banner. If professionally unbent (which should be a hundred dollar repair), it would likely go for the 5-6K range. Certainly a banner find!

BuckleBoy I'm glad I was sitting down when you told me the potential value. Can you recommend someone who is able to straighten.

I'm glad this one picked back up! I was afraid it would get lost in the shuffle. I hate to sound ignorant, but can a jr. Member such as myself nominate this as a banner find? I would have as soon as I saw it on here last night, but not sure how it works. Again, absolutely AWESOME! From a fellow Virginian, i know you'll treasure that find!
