Seems a little small for a breastplate at 2.5 inches in diameter, but it's gotta be a breastplate.
I have seen and held VA sword belt plates. But I've never even seen a VA breastplate. My O'Donnell book is not handy right now, but I'm sure someone with a copy will ID that item for you shortly.

The picture on the right is the back. Iron patch T-121 looks like it. The only other info I've found was that it was pre civil war, usually mount on a light web belt and was not suited for hard campaigning.
Never saw it. I would have replied if I had! Contrary to popular belief I don't look at everything that is posted on Tnet. Probably passed over it with a title like "i think i may have found something good."
I'll be honest, this plate belongs on the finds banner. If professionally unbent (which should be a hundred dollar repair), it would likely go for the 5-6K range. Certainly a banner find!
