I'm pretty sure this is a Pompon Eagle hat (shako) pin. I found this once again near a fort from the 1860's which has slowly been producing some great finds. It was buried about 8" down and looks like it has the slightest bit of brass still evident in a few places. The back side shows the top shank is still present but the bottom one has been broken off. It was the only find of the day but a great one in my book! Thanks for looking.

Thanks for the replies & congratulations! Does anybody happen to know if there were different varieties of these hat pins? I only ask because the stars on my pin do not line up like to ones I've seen in other photos. Look closely at the five stars under the eagle's left wing and you'll see what I mean. I'm just curious, that's all.
